Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Innbid'

Summary: 'Peters Goldteppich' produces a shorter and wider plant, with a more horizontal growth habit compared to 'Innbid'. The divisions of the pinnafitid leaves are finer in 'Peters Goldteppich' than in 'Innbid'. The peduncle is longer in 'Peters Goldteppich' than in 'Innbid'. 'Peters Goldteppich' has sparse pubescence on the lower side of the sepals, while 'Innbid' has absent to very sparse pubescence along the margins of the sepals only.'Peters Goldteppich' has longer ray florets than 'Innbid' thus giving it a larger flower diameter. The shape of the ray floret is elliptic for 'Peters Goldteppich' while it is rounded elliptic for 'Innbid'.


'Peters Goldteppich' is a vegetatively grown Bidens variety with a horizontal to pendulous growth habit. The degree of branching is strong. The stem is purple red in colour with strong to very strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration. The stem is thin to medium in thickness, with a smooth shape, and dense pubescence. The leaf arrangement is opposite. The leaf type is pinnatifid with fine divisions. The overall shape of the leaf is rhomboidal, with an acuminate shaped apex and attenuate shaped base. The pubescence on the upper side of the leaf blade is sparse to medium, while it is very sparse to sparse on the lower side. The main colour of the upper side of the leaf blade is medium green, while it is light green on the lower side. There is no variegation of the leaf blade, and there is a petiole present.

The peduncle has absent to very weak anthocyanin colouration, and strong pubescence. The sepals are acute to acuminate in shape with pubescence on the margins of the upper side and sparse pubescence on the lower side. The colour of the upper side of the sepals is dark green. Plants of 'Peters Goldteppich' flower almost continuously starting early season and flowers are moderately to very persistant. The flower is a simple type that is found both terminally and axillary, with more of an erect attitude. The ray florets are elliptic in shape, five in number and touching. The ray floret has absent to very weak recurvature of the tip, with an entire margin that has absent to very weak undulation. There is absent to very weak pubescence on the upper and lower side of the ray floret. The upper and lower sides of the ray floret are yellow in colour. There is a ray floret disc present.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Peters Goldteppich' is a product of a planned breeding program conducted by Mr. Peter Wickl-Friedl of Nev St. Johann, Switzerland. It was discovered and selected in the spring of 1996 in Nev St. Johann, Switzerland.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials were conducted in a polyhouse during the summer of 2002 by BioFlora Inc. in St. Thomas, Ontario. Trials consisted of 15 plants of each, which were grown from rooted cuttings transplanted into 11 cm pots on May 18, 2002. Observations and measurements were taken on ten plants of each variety, and colour measurements were made using RHS colour chart 2001.
