Variety used for comparison: 'Reiger Fuga'

Summary: 'Beman Rosa' produces shorter and broader plants with more basal shoots and smaller leaves than 'Reiger Fuga'. The leaves of 'Beman Rosa' are darker green with upper side that is more dull than those of 'Reiger Fuga'. Width of the mid-rib of the leaves is more narrow for 'Beman Rosa' than for 'Reiger Fuga'. Density of the inflorescence for 'Beman Rosa' is moderate to dense while it is sparse to moderately dense for 'Reiger Fuga'. The flowers of 'Beman Rosa' are larger and have a greater number of petals than those of 'Reiger Fuga'. Flower colour for 'Beman Rosa' is dark pink-red to red-pink while it is lighter red-pink for 'Reiger Fuga'. 'Beman Rosa' has flower petals with more incisions and more undulation of the margin than those of 'Reiger Fuga'.

Description:

'Beman Rosa' is an elatior begonia. The leaves are dark, reddish-green in colour on the upper side and medium, reddish-green on the lower surface. The leaves are moderately glossy on the lower surface. The leaf blade has a slight to strongly overlapping base with an acute apex of medium width. The bi-crenate incisions of the leaf blade margin are medium deep. Undulation of the margin is moderate. The bracts are medium size and green in colour with a thin red margin and an acute apex.

'Beman Rosa' produces a moderate to dense inflorescence. The flowers are double and petal size changes abruptly. Colour of the flowers is dark pink-red to red-pink on the outer and inner petals. Petal margins have moderately deep incisions and undulation of the margin is almost absent.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Beman Rosa' originated from a cross between the female parent, 'Begonia tuberhybrida' and the male parent, 'Begonia socotrana' at Benary Seeds in Hann. Münden, Germany in 1994.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Beman Rosa' were conducted in a poly-house at Norseco Inc., Boisbriand, Quebec, during the summer/fall of 2001. The trials consisted of plants grown in eight inch plastic pots. There were nine pots of 'Beman Rosa' and twelve pots of 'Reiger Fuga'. Unless otherwise indicated, measured characteristics were based on ten measurements.
