Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'CDC Copeland' and 'AC Metcalfe'

Summary: At booting, the flag leaf of 'CDC PlatinumStar' is narrower than that of 'AC Metcalfe'. The anthocyanin colouration on the tips of the lemma awns is of very weak to weak intensity for 'CDC PlatinumStar' whereas it is absent for 'AC Metcalfe'. At the beginning of ripening, 'CDC PlatinumStar' has a longer spike, excluding the awns, than the spike of 'AC Metcalfe'. 'CDC PlatinumStar' has a longer kernel than that of 'AC Metcalfe'. The lipoxygenase enzyme activity in the kernels of 'CDC PlatinumStar' is lower than the enzyme activity in the kernels of 'CDC Copeland' and 'AC Metcalfe'.

Description:

PLANT: two row, spring malting-type, medium to high frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves
YOUNG PLANT: semi-erect growth habit at tillering, absent or very sparse pubescence on lower leaf sheaths

FLAG LEAF BLADE (AT BOOTING): absent or very sparse pubescence
FLAG LEAF SHEATH: medium glaucosity, absent or very sparse pubescence
AURICLES: weak to medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration, absent or very sparse to sparse pubescence on margins

SPIKE: mid-season emergence, medium to strong glaucosity at end of anthesis, semi-erect attitude, v-shaped to open collar, tapering to parallel-sided shape, lax, sterile spikelet parallel to weakly divergent to divergent, glume and awn of median spikelet are equal to length of grain
LEMMA AWNS: very weak to weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of tips, longer than length of spike, rough spiculations on margins
FIRST SEGMENT OF RACHIS: short, absent or very weak to weak curvature

KERNEL: absent or very weak anthocyanin colouration of nerves of lemma at early to soft dough stage, whitish aleurone layer, long rachilla hairs, husk present, strong to very strong spiculation of inner lateral nerves of dorsal side of lemma, no hairiness of ventral furrow, clasping disposition of lodicules, horseshoe to incomplete horseshoe-shaped basal markings, medium to long, medium width

AGRONOMY: poor to fair resistance to lodging, good resistance to shattering, good tolerance to straw breakage, fair to good tolerance to drought, good malting quality

Origin & Breeding History: 'CDC PlatinumStar' (experimental designations CB1X-1P1, TR07921 and SM05681s) was developed by Sapporo Breweries in Gumma, Japan and the Crop Development Centre at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. The initial cross between the landrace OUI003 and 'CDC Copeland' and the first two of five backcrossing cycles of the recurrent parent, 'CDC Copeland', was done in Gumma, Japan in 2002. The subsequent three backcrossing cycles were conducted in 2003 at the Crop Development Centre in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. In December 2003, the resulting backcrossed F1 generation was allowed to self-pollinate. The backcrossed F2 generation, confirmed to be homozygous recessive for the low lipoxygenase (LOX-1 gene), was designated as CB1X-1P1, and used to plant the backcrossed F3 generation as single field plots in Saskatoon, in the summer of 2004. The resulting seeds were increased at a winter nursery in Leeston, New Zealand in September 2004 with the F5 seed bulked and designated as SM05681s. SM05681s was tested in the 2005 Crop Development Centre preliminary yield trials and subsequently sent to Leeston, New Zealand for further increase in 2005. SM05681s was further tested in the Crop Development Centre standard yield trials in 2006 and entered into testing in the Western Canadian Two Row Barley Cooperative Registration Trials as TR07921 during 2007 and 2008. Selection criteria included kernel lipoxygenase activity and agronomic performance including grain and malting parameters.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for 'CDC PlatinumStar' were conducted at the University of Saskatchewan Crop Science Field Laboratory in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan during the 2015 and 2016 growing seasons. The trials were planted in a RCB design and consisted of 3 replicates for each variety. Each 4.5 metre squared plot consisted of 5 rows 3.66 metres in length with a row spacing of 0.2 metres. The planting density was 215 plants per square metre. Measured characteristics were based on a minimum of 20 measurements each year. The lipoxygenase enzyme activity of the kernels was assayed based on three 20 gram subsamples taken from two replicates per variety per year. The mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on LSD values.
