Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'AW 106', 'Pilot', 'SQ 159' and 'WUR 37'

Summary: The sunny side of the one year old shoots of 'Wurtwinning' are light brown whereas those of 'AW 106' are medium brown. The one year old shoots of 'Wurtwinning' have many to very many lenticels whereas those of 'Pilot' have few lenticels. The length to width ratio of the leaf blade of 'Wurtwinning' is medium to large whereas that of 'AW 106' is small to medium. The margin incisions on the distal half of the leaf blade of 'Wurtwinning' are bicrenate whereas those of 'Pilot' are crenate and those of 'WUR 37' are biserrate. At balloon stage, the predominant flower colour for 'Wurtwinning' is purple whereas that of 'WUR 37' is dark pink. The fruit of 'Wurtwinning' is ovoid whereas that of 'Pilot', 'SQ 159' and 'WUR 37' is conic. The ground colour of the fruit of 'Wurtwinning' is whitish yellow whereas that of 'AW 106' and 'SQ 159' is yellow green. The flesh of the fruit of 'Wurtwinning' is cream coloured whereas that of 'SQ 159' is yellowish.

Description:

TREE: strong vigour, ramified, drooping growth habit, fruit bearing on spurs only, begins flowering mid to late season, mid to late season fruit harvest, late to very late season eating maturity

ONE-YEAR-OLD SHOOT: medium thickness, medium to long internode, light brown on side facing sun, medium to dense pubescence on distal half, many to very many lenticels

LEAF BLADE: downwards attitude in relation to shoot, medium to long, medium width, medium to large length to width ratio, medium intensity of green on upper side, bicrenate incisions of margin on distal half, absent or sparse pubescence on lower side
PETIOLE: medium length, small to medium extent of anthocyanin colouration from base

FLOWER: predominantly purple at balloon stage, medium diameter when petals pressed into horizontal position, intermediate between free and overlapping arrangement of petals, stigmas positioned above anthers

YOUNG FRUIT: medium extent of anthocyanin over colour
FRUIT: large, tall, large diameter, medium height to diameter ratio, ovoid, medium degree of ribbing, medium crowning at calyx end, medium length sepal

Origin & Breeding History: 'Wurtwinning' originated from a cross pollination between the variety 'Honeycrisp' as the female parent and the variety 'SW 159' as the male parent. The cross was conducted at Elst, the Netherlands in 2004. The new variety 'Wurtwinning' was selected in 2010, in the Netherlands based on the quality of the fruit and resistance to scab. Asexual reproduction by graft wood was initiated in the spring of 2012.

Tests & Trials: The detailed description of 'Wurtwinning' is based on the UPOV report of Technical Examination, reference number 2018/2360, purchased from The Community Plant Variety Office (CPVO), Angers, France. The trial was conducted by the Bundessortenamt, at the Prüfstelle Wurzen Testing Station in Germany, from 2021 to 2022.
