Notice of intent - Health of Animals Regulations Part XII - Transportation of Animals

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) would like to thank everyone who provided feedback on the proposed amendments to Health of Animals Regulations Part XII - Transportation of Animals, which were pre-published in the Canada Gazette, Part I (CGI). Over 50,000 comments were received from the public, producers, industry associations, governments, international organizations, animal welfare advocacy groups, veterinarians and transporters during the 75-day public consultation (December 3, 2016 to February 16, 2017).

The purpose of the proposed amendments is to better align Canada's animal transportation regulations with current science, industry practices, World Organisation for Animal Health welfare standards, and societal expectations about the proper care and transport of all animals in Canada. The current animal transportation regulations were created in 1977 and were based on transportation practices at the time (e.g. transport of cattle by rail).

This Notice of intent serves to update Canadians and members of the public who commented on the proposed amendments. The CFIA has completed a review and analysis of the feedback received and is now finalizing the proposed amendments that will be published in the Canada Gazette, Part II.

The amendments to the Health of Animals Regulations Part XII – Transportation of Animals are intended to improve transportation conditions and animal welfare, while also taking into account current industry practices.

More information on the common themes raised during the consultation period, is available in the What we heard report.
