On November 22, 2012, the Safe Food for Canadians Act received Royal Assent, effectively paving the way for broad changes and improvements for food safety in Canada.

Bringing the Act into force requires work on several fronts including developing new food regulations.

To better demonstrate how the Government of Canada is improving food safety and consumer protection in Canada, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency invited industry representatives from Canada and the United States, as well as members from federal and provincial government departments, academia and consumer groups to a Food Safety Regulatory Forum on Tuesday, June 4, 2013 in the National Capital Region.

The forum allowed participants to discuss the following initiatives:

  • a single and consistent approach to food inspection,
  • new food regulatory framework
  • regulations for imported food sector products
  • improvements to food labelling
  • strategies to promote compliance
  • outcome–based approaches to regulation
