Pine Creek Farms Manitoba Ltd. fined $60,000.00 for offences under the Meat Inspection Act

June 22, 2016, Ottawa: On March 14, 2016, in Manitoba Provincial Court in Winnipeg, Pine Creek Farms Manitoba Ltd. entered a guilty plea to one count of contravening subsection 10(2)(a) of the Meat Inspection Act. On May 30, 2016, a joint recommended sentence was accepted, and Pine Creek Farms Manitoba Ltd. was ordered to pay a fine of $60,000.00.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency's (CFIA's) investigation determined that between May 10, 2007, and October 6, 2011, Pine Creek Farms Manitoba Ltd. sold turkeys and chickens and illegally transported them between Manitoba and Saskatchewan, in contravention of subsection 10(2)(a) of the Meat Inspection Act.

Subsection 10(2)(a) of the Meat Inspection Act indicates that no person shall advertise or sell, or have in their possession meat products that do not comply with prescribed  standards and that have been conveyed from one province to another.

Pine Creek Farms Manitoba Ltd. is not a federally registered facility and, as such, under the Meat Inspection Act and Regulations, cannot legally transport chickens and turkeys from one province to another.

The CFIA is responsible for administering and enforcing federal legislation, acts and regulations, including the Meat Inspection Act and Regulations.
