Mohamed Elmufti: Lab Technician Finds a Home and Purpose
Mohamed Elmufti has lived on four continents but presently calls Canada home, more specifically the CFIA laboratory located on Fallowfield Road. This 2200 acre site in Ottawa's greenbelt allows deer to roam freely and CFIA staff to play volleyball and basketball or enjoy cross-country skiing. "Not too many employees get to experience this regularly," he smiles.
Working as a microbiology technician, Mohamed tests for various animal diseases and conducts research to find more sensitive detection methodologies. He proudly recognizes his contribution towards protecting the public's health and food supply. "The work is satisfying because there is a greater good involved."
With the support of his managers, Mohamed has applied for graduate studies in the area of Salmonella detection and prevention. "There is a large and young talent pool at the CFIA and the Agency is very intent on developing its skill set. So you know that there are options to accommodate your career choices."
