Consultation on options for indicating the origin of imported food

Current status: Closed

This consultation ran from June 22, 2019 to September 4, 2019.

Introduction

As part of its consultations on the Food Labelling Modernization initiative's proposed regulatory changes, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is seeking specific views about the wording of the origin declaration on the label of prepackaged imported foods.

The Codex Alimentarius, which develops international food standards, does not prescribe the statement that should be used for declaring the origin of food. For certain food commodities, the Safe Food for Canadian Regulations (SFCR) currently require that the origin be indicated by using the term "Product of."

The proposed amendment to the SFCR, which expands the origin requirement to most imported foods, does not prescribe the statement to be used to indicate the origin. CFIA is also proposing to remove the requirement of "Product of" where currently used in the SFCR and is seeking specific comments on appropriate wording to declare the origin. We are considering the following new options:

  1. "imported from [origin]"
  2. "from [origin]"

Your comments and level of support towards these options will be taken into consideration by CFIA in reaching its decision. If you have other options please include these for our consideration.
